How Much Does a Systems Developer Make?

The Systems Developer is a highly trained engineer that creates and designs complicated information technology systems.  Systems developers specialize in creating the software systems that allow operating systems to run on servers, desktops, laptops, and any other computer on the system hardware level. System developers also create the interfaces that allow users to successfully operate their machines. They play several roles as they successfully develop systems software and are often paid handsomely to ensure users are able to interact and operate the computer systems that are in use every day. Without the ability to operate these interfaces, they wouldn’t be considered what is called, “user-friendly.”

Analysis

In the analysis phase of a project, the system developer seeks to understand the needs of the people who use their systems. The developers will then use the system’s software to translate these needs into operating processes for the computer to execute. Developers will also devise internal systems that perform very specific functions that help the users have a positive computing experience.

Project Design

Using various flow charts, diagrams, and project scoping methods, the systems developers then create the instructions for programmers to create the application itself. Using object-oriented design, they use software like Microsoft Visio to create the flow charts, graphs, and diagrams which explain in graphic detail how the systems developers would like the system to look and operate.

Beta Testing

Systems developers work closely with systems analysts on software that is being tested. This process is done in order to fix coding errors prior to release. The testing ensures that the system software and its interface properties operate properly. In beta testing, the developers will often deploy a sample of the software and work with a select base of users in order for them to provide much needed feedback. This information is then noted and taken back to the programmers who provide the additional changes to the system to make it more, stable, user-friendly, and functional. Throughout the entire process, systems developers will document their work for integrity purposes. They will use this documentation to create the necessary training materials that enable users to properly use and operate the software.

There is an expansive demand for systems developers that only continues to grow. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job growth rate of systems developers will rise 22% within the next year with a median salary of $93,350 annually.

Technology has become a critical part of our lives and the development of new technology will require the skills of systems developers to allow that technology to function. Systems developers are constantly improving their skills to keep up with the constant change in technology. Those that keep abreast of those changes and related technology in an effort to develop new software will have the best job opportunities and the ability to command competitive systems developer salaries.
